I have the privilege of leading a team of over 2,600 amazing individuals across Canada who are energetic, empathetic, and dedicated. We have a unique and passionate culture at Rogers, and keeping our teams engaged is always top of mind. Throughout my career, I’ve learned that my true responsibility as a leader is to inspire as many people as I can to make a positive impact – with our customers, with their teammates, and with themselves.
Regardless of what industry you’re in or the size of your team, staying connected to your people and being in tune to what motivates them will allow you to truly impact how engaged your team members are. Here are three simple things you can do to spark engagement with your own team:
Communication is Key
Get your team’s feedback on what matters most to them – communication is key! Hold listening sessions, focus groups, or a team ideation meeting to figure out what you can all stand for. Encourage everyone to share their thoughts, identify what’s going well, and where they think things can improve. From there, you can build a meaningful action plan on the things that matter most. People want to feel connected to something and to have a collective goal they can rally behind.
Reflect, Revise, and Celebrate
Driving towards a common goal can be a lengthy journey, and in order to stay motivated, it’s so important to continually check in and recognize progress. At Rogers, I encourage my team to have weekly touch points so everyone has an opportunity to continually reflect, revise and celebrate. Asking meaningful questions like “What are you most proud of this week?” and “What would you do differently if you could?” guide our actions throughout the week and boost our motivation to achieve great results.
Engage and Empower
One thing I always strive to do as a leader is show my team how valued they are and how critical they are to our organization. People want to feel valued and they want to feel challenged, so give them an opportunity to engage with the business in a different way. I personally love to ask people to contribute to solving a problem bigger than they thought they could solve. Every single person who works within a business, regardless of title, wants to own responsibility, demonstrate leadership, and be an expert at their craft. This helps to shift mindset and empowers people to feel like they can make a bold impact.
